I think these are the reasons German war crimes are given more attention than Japanese ones:
1. ~~Germany Talks about the Holocaust a lot. Germany is very apologetic about the war crimes they committed in WW2. They teach WW2 history from a very young age, they organize field trips for students into places like Auschwitz, and they ban all Nazi imagery. This stands in stark contrast to Japan’s attitude. [They deny the rape of Nanking](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre_denial) as well as [Unit 731](http://www.technologyartist.com/unit_731/). They also tend to make themselves out as the victim in WW2 due to the fire bombings of Tokyo and of course, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. German acceptance brings the crime to the forefront, while Japanese denial keeps it hidden away.~~ EDIT Japan does not deny WW2 war crimes, see below.
2. Greater fascination with the European theatre than with the Pacific theatre. With the exception of Iwo Jima, most WW2 iconography comes from the European theatre. Things like D-Day, Churchill’s speeches, Hitler’s speeches, The Holocaust, The Swastika, even famous war heroes like Jack Churchill and Himo Säya come from the European theatre. Because of this, people know more about the “story” behind war in Europe. They tend to know a little more about the “heroes” and the “villains”, just by virtue of having heard the story more.
3. The Nazi’s did something that was previously unheard of. While the idea of internment camps is nothing new, the idea of the systematic decimation of an entire race certainly was. Although concentration camps had been used [by the British empire] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_concentration_and_internment_camps#United Kingdom), these camps weren’t made for the extermination of their occupants. Germany committed the first and arguably the most efficient large scale genocide in history, and it was very well publicized. Soldiers going crazy and razing civilian populations is nothing new. It dates back to the first empires in history.
TL;DR ~~Germany admits their crimes and Japan denies~~, more people know about European theatre, Nazi war crimes were brand new and Japan’s weren’t.
Sorry for the Berlin Wall of text.
