Before condemning these soldiers, keep in mind that they had likely come home from a hell that we can’t imagine. One where anyone that looked like these people were trying to kill them. War is a horrible thing, and skews perceptions.
Clint Eastwood made a couple of movies about the battle for Iwo Jima (“Flags of Our Fathers”, and “Letters From Iwo Jima”) that showed perspectives from both sides. The war in the Pacific was way worse than the European theater in terms of casualties, POWs, and just about every other metric.
SOURCE: My grandfather was a forward artillery observer in the Pacific for the entire war. Funny note: after a trip to New Zealand towards the end of his life, we all asked how it was. He replied with “It’s a hell of a lot nicer without people shooting at you”. He didn’t seem to even realize how beautiful many of the places he had been were/are.
Edit: wow, some of you are really amazing and your efforts to be contrarian. I’m talking military deaths for the US soldiers (you know, THE ONES IN THE PHOTO). Russia/Germany and Japan/China have NOTHING to do with this photo. Additionally, your figures don’t seem to include deaths from the myriad of diseases that killed many soliders. You also fail to consider the psychological impact of seeing all your friends die for an uninhabited chunk of rock in the middle of nowhere, while the troops in Europe were liberating countries, and being treated as heroes practically everywhere they went.
Good job on completely missing the point of my post, dipshits
