Jacques Plante was one of my favourite players. He was a thinker, and many of his theories and strategies of goaltending still live on, and have had a deep effect on the game. He also didn’t give a shit what anyone else thought, which is probably why he was the first goaltender to design, make and wear a facemask.
He was a bit of a loner – when the team was on the road, he often sat in his hotel room and knit while the other guys were out ripping up the town. He knit his own long underwear, socks and hats – if you see a picture of him in a toque, it was probably one he made himself.
